Macdonald Professor of Volcanology at the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>) at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa, has been a part of the field response team from the <a href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/observatories\/hvo\/\">Hawaiian Volcano Observatory<\/a> (<abbr>HVO<\/abbr>) since a week before the new K\u012blauea eruption began.<\/p>\n<p>Commented Houghton, &ldquo;The <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/GG\/index.html\">Department of Geology and Geophysics<\/a> (<abbr>GG<\/abbr>) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.higp.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Institute of Geophysics and Planetology<\/a> (<abbr>HIGP<\/abbr>) have an outstanding endorsement of our training of volcanologists as seen in the composition of the <abbr>HVO<\/abbr> response crew.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The group of around 40 <abbr>HVO<\/abbr>-affiliated scientists working 24\/7 at the observatory includes nine past or present <abbr>GG<\/abbr>\/<abbr>HIGP<\/abbr> graduates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jim Kauahikaua<\/strong> (United States Geological Survey (<abbr>USGS<\/abbr>) scientist, ex-scientist-in-charge)\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Frank Trusdell<\/strong> (<abbr>USGS<\/abbr> scientist)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wendy Stovall<\/strong> (<abbr>USGS<\/abbr> scientist)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mathew Pattrick<\/strong> (<abbr>USGS<\/abbr> scientist)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carolyn Parcheta<\/strong> (<abbr>USGS<\/abbr> scientist)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tim Orr<\/strong> (<abbr>USGS<\/abbr> scientist)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Samantha Isgett<\/strong> (post-doctoral researcher)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brian Shiro<\/strong> (current <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> student)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brett Walker<\/strong> (current <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> student)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Walker commented, &ldquo;It is like a reunion of <abbr title=\"University of
