To celebrate the achievements of graduates of the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at M\u0101noa’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (SOEST) Maile Mentoring Bridge<\/a>, students and mentors designed and created k\u012bhei worn during the spring 2018 graduation ceremony.<\/p>\n

Rosie Alegado<\/strong><\/a>, assistant professor in SOEST<\/abbr>‘s Department of Oceanography<\/a> and 糖心视频<\/abbr> Sea Grant<\/a> program, invited two traditional ʻohe<\/span> k\u0101pala practitioners from H\u014dnaunau on Hawaiʻi<\/span> Island, Uncle George Place and 糖心视频<\/abbr> Sea Grant’s Chantal Chung<\/strong><\/a>, to lead the first SOEST<\/abbr> Hana Noʻeau<\/span> Workshop in May.<\/p>\n

During traditional graduation ceremonies for the ancient arts, students who have acquired sufficient skill and knowledge to advance to the next level of training are presented with k\u012bhei by their teachers. K\u012bhei are traditional Hawaiian garments worn during ceremony and protocol, often adorned with symbols representing the expertise of the wearer.<\/p>\n

“The SOEST<\/abbr> Maile Mentoring Bridge program seeks to create nurturing spaces for kamaʻ\u0101ina<\/span> (local) students pursuing geoscience degrees at 糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa,” said Alegado. “A critical component in our students’ educational journey is contextualizing their science in the framework of our host culture.”<\/p>\n

The Maile students learned how to design and carve symbols representing their science and academic journey on traditional bamboo stamps or ʻohe<\/span> k\u0101pala. They were then stamped on k\u012bhei made of undyed muslin, reminiscent of kapa or paper mulberry cloth. Students were also instructed on the significance of caring for and wearing k\u012bhei.<\/p>\n

“This was my first experience making k\u012bhei, and I was humbled to be a part of Uncle George and Chantal’s workshop,” said Kammie Tavares<\/strong>, graduate of the Global Environmental Science’s bachelor’s degree program<\/a>. “It was very special that my own hands created the tool of my k\u012bhei pattern, and I was proud to wear my k\u012bhei on graduation day.”<\/p>\n

Additionally, Place designed and made a stamp that incorporated elements of ocean, earth and atmosphere to represent SOEST<\/abbr> that was then used to create k\u012bhei for SOEST<\/abbr> Dean Brian Taylor<\/strong><\/a> and Associate Dean Chip Fletcher<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Said Taylor, “This is a very special gift that I will wear with pride knowing the skill, care and tradition with which it was made.”<\/p>\n

The workshop was made possible by grants from the 糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity Program<\/a> and the National Science Foundation, and support from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Office of STEM Education<\/a> and the SOEST<\/abbr> Dean’s Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n
