(Photo courtesy of <abbr>HyTI<\/abbr>, <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A satellite designed and developed by researchers and engineers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> is among 16 small research satellites from 10 states that <abbr title=\"National Aeronautics and Space Administration\">NASA<\/abbr> has selected to fly as auxiliary payloads aboard space missions planned to launch in the next three years.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2018, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.higp.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Institute of Geophysics and Planetology<\/a> (<abbr>HIGP<\/abbr>) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>) received $3.9 million from <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> in support of a two-year project to develop the Hyperspectral Thermal Imager (<abbr>HyTI<\/abbr>) CubeSat.<\/p>\n<p>CubeSats, also known as nanosatellites, are small satellites intended for low Earth orbit that can explore a variety of scientific and technological questions. <abbr>HIGP<\/abbr> researchers, in collaboration with <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and several companies, will demonstrate with the <abbr>HyTI<\/abbr> CubeSat Mission how new technology, some of which was invented in <abbr>HIGP<\/abbr>, can be used to monitor water resources and volcanic hazards from space.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>HyTI<\/abbr> represents an important interdisciplinary project involving <abbr>HIGP<\/abbr> instruments and science along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsfl.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Space Flight Laboratory<\/a> (<abbr>HSFL<\/abbr>) engineering support, all in a very small satellite format,&rdquo; said <strong>Robert Wright<\/strong>, interim director of <abbr>HIGP<\/abbr> and principal investigator of the <abbr>HyTI<\/abbr> project.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, 12 <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> M&#257;noa team members, nine of whom earned degrees at <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, are working to ready the <abbr>HyTI<\/abbr> for launch. Once in orbit, the satellite will scan Earth with specialized cameras and detectors that collect information about how much thermal radiation Earth&#8217;s surface and atmosphere emits at a variety of wavelengths.
