\r\n

“Injuries to the personal selfhood are visible markers of the submerged histories of the injuries of everyone in the past, the present, and the future.\u201d These words were written by Alok Bhalla for the introduction to his translation of Kumarajiva: A Buddhist Monk on the Silk Road,<\/em> a biography in poetry by Kunwar Narain. For us they capture something essential about women\u2019s experience as witnesses. Trying to represent this essence, we asked poet Adele Ne Jame if she\u2019d curate a feature for Vice-Versa<\/em> composed of poetry, essays, and stories\u2014an attempt to harness the tremendous emotional and psychological power of women responding to war and its tragic consequences. Our focus was the Middle East, but the work of the literary and visual artists here apply to conflicts\u2014both internal and external\u2014everywhere.<\/p>\r\n

The work featured in the header this week is Syrian Migration Series #4, <\/em>a monumental painting by Helen Zughaib.<\/p>\r\n
