This talk focuses on how South Korea emerged from poverty and dependence on foreign aid to develop into the advanced economy it is today. What lessons can be learned from its compressed growth? Korea achieved a complete economic transformation, but at what costs? Professor Yoon-Je Cho will be discussing some of the themes explored in his new book, The Political Economy of Korea鈥檚 Economic Growth: Reflections and Lessons, which investigates the past, present, and future of the Korean economy. Unlike many existing works on Korea鈥檚 economic development, this analysis places particular emphasis on Korea鈥檚 historical legacy, the Korean War, the role of the United States, the international environment, and national leadership. How did state forces, social influences, and environmental factors contribute to the dramatic dynamics of Korea鈥檚 economy over a 70-year period? How did the market transform after the 1997 Asian financial crisis from economic collapse to opportunity? Dr. Cho will examine contemporary Korean economic and social challenges as legacies of its rapid, compressed growth.
