Center for Okinawan Studies Film Screening - Here Lies Our Tempest

This is a free screening of the first installment of a film series entitled Okinawa Through a Transnational Lens. The series features a variety of “transnationalâ€� films featuring Okinawa and/or Okinawans. The first film to be screened is Here Lies Our Tempest (ã�“ã�®å³¶ã�«åµ�ã�¯çœ ã‚‹). The screening will be followed by a brief commentary from PROFESSOR DERRICK HIGGENBOTHAM of the ÌÇÐÄÊÓÆµM English Department and a Q&A/discussion. Date: October 7, 2026 Time: 6:30 PM (Doors open 6:15pm approx.) Location: HIG 110 (2025 Correa Road, ÌÇÐÄÊÓÆµ-Manoa Campus). (***Please note: No Food or Drink is permitted in the HIG 110) About the Film: HERE LIES OUR TEMPEST (71 minutes, 2025) is a dark fantasy adaption of Shakespeare’s The Tempest set in Ancient Japan and filmed in Okinawa. A distinctive feature of the film is its audio track, which is rich in evocative sounds but contains no dialogue. The film placed second in the 2025 Shinsekai Film Festival and was featured at the 2026 Cinema at Sea Okinawa Pan-Pacific International Film Festival. About the Director: The film’s director, screen writer, and editor, MISA OGAWA who also plays the role of Ariel in the film, was born in the United State in 2001. She began acting at the age of 6 and has since appeared in numerous musicals and plays. She moved to Japan at age 11, and moved with her family to Okinawa 2 years later, where she directed her first short film at age 16. Misa graduated from Nihon University College of Art with a Bachelor's degree in film direction. Additionally, she was selected as a workshop member for "ndjc: New Directions in Japanese Cinema" commissioned by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the "Kyoto Filmmakers Lab: Hands-on JIDAIGEKI" project.
