Upgrading Your Data Research Skillset

October 8, 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Campus Center 308 and Zoom

Need a refresh or looking to upgrade your data research skills? Join Graduate Division and The Department of Public Health Sciences for a 3-part professional development series this fall. Designed to equip graduate researchers from various disciplines with the cross-cutting methodologies shaping modern environmental health sciences. Whether your focus is data science, biology, environmental science, or environmental engineering, these workshops provide actionable skills in health data analysis, spatial statistics, epigenetics analysis, and nature-based engineering solutions. By bridging the gap between computational tools, biological responses, and engineering, this series offers hands-on experience for students in data science, engineering, life sciences, public health, and beyond. Series Schedule: October 8, 2026 (12:00-1:00 PM HST) Application of Spatial Data Science Guest Speaker: Dr. Justin Van Ee, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health Sciences This hands-on workshop will introduce participants to fitting and interpreting a variety of spatial statistical models in R using air pollution and climate data. November 12, 2026 (12:00-1:00 PM HST) - Green Infrastructure, a Nature-Based Solution Guest Speaker: Dr. Onja Davidson Raoelison, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health Sciences The presentation will highlight a stormwater biofilter as an example of green stormwater infrastructure and explain how it supports water management and environmental resilience. December 10, 2026 (12:00-1:00 PM HST) - Epigenetic Analysis in Environmental Health Research Guest Speaker: Dr. Christian Dye, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health Sciences This workshop will introduce key concepts and analytical approaches used to study epigenetic changes in environmental health research. Participants will learn how epigenetic data can be analyzed and interpreted to better understand how environmental exposures may influence biological processes and health outcomes.
