ORE Seminar: Booms, Blasts, and Moon Dust: From Earth鈥檚 Atmosphere to the [.
October 12, 12:00pm - 1:00pmMānoa Campus, POST 723
Space exploration generates powerful physical phenomena鈥攆rom the violent plume-surface interactions of lunar landings to the fiery dynamics of atmospheric re-entry鈥攖hat pose hazards demanding novel sensing approaches to detect and understand them. This talk connects three projects that leverage these effects: distributed fiber optic sensing of explosion and rocket-launch experiments to investigate lunar plume鈥搒urface hazards; real-time observation of a Falcon 9 lunar impact using Chile鈥檚 Very Large Telescope; and detection of Artemis II鈥檚 re-entry using seismic and acoustic sensors, extending detection ranges farther offshore than ever before. Together, these efforts deepen our understanding of energy transfer, ejecta dynamics, and wave propagation鈥攚hile expanding our capacity to monitor hazards throughout the journey to the Moon and back. // Dr. Carly Donahue, Senior Scientist, Los Alamos National Laboratory/Earth and Environmental Sciences
