What is JET?
The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program is a competitive employment opportunity that invites college graduates worldwide to live and work in cities, towns, and villages in Japan. Being a JET is an opportunity to represent one鈥檚 country, foster cross-cultural understanding and forge interpersonal global connections between local communities and fellow participants.

Positions

ALT (Assistant Language Teacher)
Over 90% of JETs are employed as ALTs. ALTs are engaged in language instruction and are mainly assigned to local boards of education or elementary, junior, or senior high schools. Japanese language ability is desirable but not necessary.

CIR (Coordinator for International Relations)
 CIRs are placed in administrative offices of local authorities or related organizations to promote more inclusive local communities and support internationalization activities. To effectively perform the duties required of a CIR, a high degree of fluency and command of Japanese is required.

Timeline:
 Late September: Online application becomes available
Early November: Application closes
Late January/Early February: Candidates that pass the initial screening are offered an interview
April: Announcement of results
May: Successful candidates are informed of their placement
June - July: Orientation and submission of additional documents
Late July/Early August: Departure for Japan

Eligibility: The U.S. JET Program requires all applicants intending to interview at a Japanese diplomatic mission based in the U.S. to hold U.S. citizenship. Not holding U.S citizenship does not bar eligibility. Non-U.S. citizens must inquire with the Japanese diplomatic mission in the country where they hold citizenship to confirm final eligibility. Successful candidates must have a Bachelor鈥檚 degree by June of the departure year. Successful candidates that possess Japanese citizenship must renounce their Japanese citizenship prior to departure.
