Seminar Panel Discussion on Axis Deer Management

How can we manage Axis deer to achieve conservation, hunting, and agricultural goals? Panel: Mackenzie Latimer (DOFAW), Jonathon Sprague (Pūlama Lāna‘i), and Wade Naguwa (NREM ������Ƶ) Axis deer populations have grown rapidly across Maui Nui, with significant impacts on native ecosystems, agricultural lands, and hunting practices. Managing these populations effectively requires balancing multiple, sometimes competing goals: protecting native habitat and watersheds, reducing agricultural damage, and facilitating hunting as a cultural and food resource. This panel brings together perspectives from forestry management, game management, and population ecology research to discuss practical solutions and address questions such as: What data and tools are available to guide management decisions? Where do goals align, and where might there be tradeoffs? What collaborative approaches could move this work forward? Join us for this productive discussion!
