The ocean connects all of us

ldquo; When students work side by side with colleagues from Hokkaido University, at sea, on the coast, and in the watershed, they see that the ocean connects all of us,” said Margaret McManus, director of UC?AO.

Global Environmental Science undergraduate students Ruby Helmuth and Kyoko Suzuki participated in a 26-day Arctic expedition aboard Hokkaido University’s training ship Oshoro-Maru, gaining hands-on experience in oceanographic sampling and marine research.

Oceanography master’s student Tyra Arends and undergraduate Flannery McGreevy spent a week studying coastal environmental challenges, including pollution, biodiversity loss and erosion.

In northern Hokkaido, undergraduate students Rex Bregman and Sean Michael Monte explored connections between forests, rivers and coastal ecosystems through field surveys and visits to aquaculture facilities.

The exchange provided students with opportunities to develop scientific skills, learn from international researchers and explore approaches to protecting marine ecosystems.
