Critical: Alcohol Overdose (Poisoning)
Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that slows down breathing, heart rate, and brain activity. An overdose can quickly lead to a coma or death.
Signs of an Alcohol Emergency
If someone shows even one of these symptoms, their life is in danger:
- Unconscious or semi-conscious and cannot be awakened.
- Vomiting while sleeping or passed out.
- Slow breathing (8 breaths per minute or less) or irregular breathing (10+ seconds between breaths).
- Cold, clammy, pale, or bluish skin.
- Severe disorientation (doesn't know where they are or who you are).
What to Do Immediately
- Call For Help: Call 911 immediately (or (808) 956-6911 for Campus Security if you are on-campus).
- Use the Bacchus Maneuver: If they must lie down, turn them onto their side with their top knee bent to prevent them from rolling over. This keeps their airway clear so they do not choke if they vomit.
- Stay with them: Keep them awake and monitor them closely until emergency personnel arrive.
What NOT to Do
- Do not let them "sleep it off." Blood alcohol levels can continue to rise even after someone stops drinking.
- Do not leave them alone.
- Do not give them food, water, coffee, or medication.
- Do not put them in a cold shower (this can induce shock).
- Do not try to make them walk or exercise.
Don't Hesitate: Never worry about getting a friend in trouble. Your priority is saving a life. Call 911 or Campus Security and let the professionals handle it.
