The Ad Hoc Mānoa Faculty Senate Committee on Artificial Intelligence (AI) is charged with advising the Mānoa Faculty Senate (MFS) on matters related to the development, use, and implications of Artificial Intelligence in academics, research, instruction, service, administration, and the workplace, and on the student experience at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Specifically, the Committee shall:

  1. Consult on AI Policy

    • Review, advise on, and provide recommendations regarding proposed or existing university-level policies, guidelines, or practices related to AI systems and tools.
    • Coordinate with relevant MFS standing committees (e.g., Academic Policy, Professional Matters, Student Affairs, Research [graduate education]) as appropriate.
    • Seek representation on systemwide and campus AI committees.
  2. Monitor AI Developments and Impacts

    • Monitor emerging AI technologies, initiatives, and external regulations that may affect faculty work, academic integrity, research practices, data privacy, accessibility, and equity.
    • Assess potential benefits, risks, and unintended consequences of AI adoption in academic and administrative contexts.
  3. Support Faculty and Student Interests

    • Identify issues related to academic freedom, workload, authorship, intellectual property, data governance, ethics, and responsible AI use.
    • Consider implications for teaching and learning, including assessment, pedagogy, and student support.
  4. Information Sharing and Senate Communication

    • Keep the Mānoa Faculty Senate informed of significant AI-related developments, initiatives.
    • Provide reports, briefings, or recommendations to the Senate Executive Committee (SEC) as requested or deemed necessary.
  5. Scope and Authority

    • The Committee serves in an advisory capacity and does not establish policy, although it is encouraged to articulate the faculty opinion on needed policies or changes.
    • Recommendations shall be forwarded to the SEC and/or relevant standing committees for consideration.
  6. Reporting

    • The Committee Chair shall report regularly to the Senate Executive Committee.
    • A summary report of findings and recommendations shall be provided to the Mānoa Faculty Senate as appropriate.
  7. Duration

    • The Committee is constituted as an ad hoc committee and shall continue for one year or until discharged by the Mānoa Faculty Senate or the Senate Executive Committee.
    • The Senate Executive Committee will initiate the process for a standing (regular) committee of the senate focused on AI. Members of the AI committee are encouraged to advise the SEC on this matter.
