“The Things That I Couldn’t Lose: Blues Epistemologies, ʻĀina Educati

October 15, 12:00pm - 1:15pm
Mānoa Campus, KUYKENDALL 410

A number of education researchers rightly argue that classrooms concerned with love must also be concerned with loss. Learning to honor loss, however, also requires unsettling why some lives and places, relative to others, have been made more vulnerable to premature death. In this works-in-progress talk, Ethan weaves education scholarship on grief work with Clyde Woods’s blues epistemology to examine learning in a time of incalculable loss and still abundant possibilities. Making space for the blues—insights imbued in song, oral histories, and cultural practices—offers possibilities for meeting young people where they are and deepening a fierce love and devotion to ‘ina.
