Dr. Kiriko Takahashi is an Associate Specialist at the Center on Disability Studies and a Project Associate Professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST), The University of Tokyo. Her work focuses on improving access, participation, and inclusion for students with disabilities in higher education. Drawing on her research and the Platform of Higher Education in Disabilities (PHED), as well as her chapter in the International Handbook of Disabilities in Higher Education, this seminar will provide an overview of the evolving landscape of disability services in Japanese higher education. It will examine the development of institutional and national policies, changes following Japan’s ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and ongoing efforts to promote reasonable accommodation, accessibility, and inclusive higher education. The talk will also consider current challenges and emerging practices in supporting students with disabilities across Japanese universities.
