Calvin to Mao and Beyond: A Memoir

Edgar A. Porter’s life has taken him across continents, ideologies, and eras of upheaval. His memoir, Calvin to Mao and Beyond (2026), traces his journey from the American South during Jim Crow and the Vietnam War to affiliation with progressive movements focused on prison abuses and the death penalty, culminating in work with Communist organizations inspired by Mao Zedong’s revolutionary vision. He was one of the first Americans invited to live in China as it reopened to the West in the late 1970s, transforming not only his worldview, but the course of his career. The “and Beyond” of the title reflects decades as an international educator, intercultural communication advisor and writer of six books on Asian history and politics while affiliated with the University of Hawai‘i and universities in Japan, and Austria.
