Roots and Routes: Over a Century of Korean Diaspora
October 29, 1:30pm - 4:30pmMānoa Campus, Center for Korean Studies Auditorium (1881 East-West Road, Honolulu, HI 96822)
This symposium examines the formation and evolution of Korean immigrant communities in HawaiÊ»i and California during the first half of the twentieth century. Drawing on newspaper archives, educational records, and cross-racial community histories, the presentations explore how language, schooling, and interethnic solidarity shaped a distinct diasporic identity—one situated between homeland ties and the racial and political landscape of the United States. This event is co-organized by members of the SRI Management Committee: Dr. Youjeong Kim, Associate Professor of Journalism in the School of Communication and Information; Dr. M. KunMi Yu Danico, Director of the Center for Oral History and Professor of Ethnic Studies; and Dr. Seunghye Hong, Professor in the Department of Social Work, Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health, University of HawaiÊ»i at ²ÑÄå²Ô´Ç²¹.
