Hawaiʻi Side Stories: Lowriders, Culture & Community

October 15, 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Andrew's Amphitheatre

"HawaiÊ»i Side Story: Lowriders, Culture and Community," brings an interdisciplinary educational showcase to the University of HawaiÊ»i at ²ÑÄå²Ô´Ç²¹, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month through the lens of Lowrider culture on Thursday, October 15, 2026 (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM) at Andrews Amphitheater and Legacy Path. Lowriding represents a significant intersection of Latinx visual art, community history, and mechanical engineering. This event celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month and Homecoming while advancing vital academic and community partnerships between the College of Social Sciences, Dean John Ulloa of West Valley College, our student-run Registered Independent Organizations (Latinos Unidos, the Black Student Association), Native Hawaiian Student Services, SEED, Ethnic Studies, and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce HawaiÊ»i, and other valued community partners. Rather than serving solely as a static vehicle display, the event centers automotive customization as an intellectual and artistic discipline. Local vehicle builders will participate in live, student and scholar-led interviews that position them as primary knowledge creators to discuss connections to place, community, and society. The initiative bridges academic research with grassroots community practices, fostering direct engagement among ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ ²ÑÄå²Ô´Ç²¹ students, faculty, cultural organizations, and local craftsmen.
