Description
Heʻe hōlua is a traditional game of sledding on a hōlua sled along a hōlua course, which is called a hōlua. The course, where the sledding occurs, is smoothed over with smaller rocks, earth, pili grass, and kukui oil. Sledding is conducted along a hōlua course which is set on a steep hill ending in a level field or, sometimes, in the ocean. It is a competitive sport. Heʻe hōlua is famed and most often competed in by aliʻi. It is frequently part of traditional stories, such as with the story of Pele and ʴDZʻ. These days, there are not many courses that exist. One of the most famous that have survived is located in Keauhou, Kona, Hawaiʻi.
