Description
°²¹³ó´ÇÊ»´Ç±ô²¹·É±ð is a mokupuni that sits within the ahupuaÊ»a of ±á´Ç²Ô³Ü²¹Ê»³Ü±ô²¹, Maui. It is the smallest of the eight main Hawaiian islands, situated about 7 miles southwest of Maui, it is 11 miles long and 7 miles wide. Ê»AlalÄ�keiki is the channel between °²¹³ó´ÇÊ»´Ç±ô²¹·É±ð and Maui. MoaÊ»ula-nui is the highest point on the island. NÄ�ulu is the rain at both °²¹³ó´ÇÊ»´Ç±ô²¹·É±ð and ±á´Ç²Ô³Ü²¹Ê»³Ü±ô²¹, Maui. °²¹³ó´ÇÊ»´Ç±ô²¹·É±ð is a former site of U.S. military bomb testing and after years of advocacy, governing rights to the island were transferred to the State of ±á²¹·É²¹¾±Ê»¾± and the U.S. Military ceased their bombing activities. This island is one of the most dense places of archaeological sites in ±á²¹·É²¹¾±Ê»¾±. There are many stone structures, both ancient and modern, that the Protect °²¹³ó´ÇÊ»´Ç±ô²¹·É±ð Ê»Ohana (PKO) maintains. °²¹³ó´ÇÊ»´Ç±ô²¹·É±ð Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) is the state agency charged with co-governing the island along with PKO.

1977 Members of the PKO George Helm and Kimo Mitchell were lost at sea rescuing 2 members of the PKO off of °²¹³ó´ÇÊ»´Ç±ô²¹·É±ð;
1982 first Makahiki ceremony on °²¹³ó´ÇÊ»´Ç±ô²¹·É±ð in modern memory; 1990 active fire and bombing stops on the island;
1992 °²¹³ó´ÇÊ»´Ç±ô²¹·É±ð is transferred to the state of ±á²¹·É²¹¾±Ê»¾± but “held in trust for a future sovereign entity.â€�
